Beverley Veneers History

1966

Beverley Veneers is Established

Established in 1966 by Tony Warburton. Operating from premises on Mill Lane in Beverley. Age 28, Tony’s life had been heavily influenced by his grandfather on his mother’s side, George Blanchard. George had owned a timber yard in Scunthorpe and had been a wheelwright, joiner and undertaker through both the World Wars and with a wealth of experience in timber, coffins and funerals.

1968

New Bigger Premises

Beverley Veneers moves to new premises on Grovehill Road. These afforded the company much needed space, primarily for the storage of chipboard, crates of veneer and barrels of glue but also for the various large machines involved in the production of coffin sets.

1970

A Change in the Industry

The funeral sector was in the grip of change, with English oak and elm becoming extremely scarce. Veneering chipboard to look like a solid coffin was an overnight success, saving both trees and money. Funeral homes from the top of Scotland down to the south coast and everywhere in between, were using coffin sets from Beverley Veneers or as it became more popular were buying coffins from coffin makers who were customers of Beverley Veneers.

1986

Embossed Panels

Up until now veneer sets were all about plain flat sides but in this year two new presses were made at Beverley Veneers each with 4 large hydraulic rams that could emboss a panel design into the veneer and down into the chipboard. This significant development added an embossed panel to the range which was extremely well received by all the customers.

1991

Production Warehouse

The decision was made to move production into what was previously the company’s warehousing located on the other side of Grovehill Road. This building was more modern, easier to heat with a lower roof and in much better condition.

2007

Founder Retires

Tony Warburton retires to Guernsey and Beverley Veneers is sold along with his funeral group and crematoriums. But under the new owners it’s business as usual for the Beverley Veneers team of loyal employees.

2013

Joining the Jukes Group

Beverley Veneers becomes part of the Jukes Group. This is the start of an intensive programme of investment and improvement transforming all the different production processes, improving efficiencies and working conditions for all the staff.

2019

Ernie Becomes General Manager

Ernie has been with Beverly veneers since 1983, straight from leaving school as a factory operative. With hard work and promotions throughout the years he then went on to  accept the well deserved General Managed role in 2019.

2019

Laura Rainbird Joins The Team

Also, this year, Laura Rainbird joins Beverley Veneers bringing on board her business administration and accounting skills making a massive contribution to the office team.

2020

A Challenging Time

Has to go down as one of the most challenging years in the history of Beverley Veneers, working tirelessly to meet the demands of our customers with coffin sets, and yet despite the spike in orders, nobody was let down.

2024

Karl Walker Joins The Team

Karl Walker, Ernie’s son joins Beverley Veneers as Operations Manager bringing to the role a very hands-on approach having worked previously in the building and landscaping trade for 10 years. During the Summer this year, Karl’s help installing a brand-new boiler used for generating steam to heat the veneer presses has already proved invaluable.

2025

Rebrand, New Brochure, New Website & New Uniforms

We are proud of our history, skilled team and high quality products. Our new brand, new brochure, new website and new uniforms makes us feel even prouder still.

Looking After The

Environment

All our coffins are suitable for cremation and burial purposes. Timbers and timber products used in our manufacturing processes are carefully sourced from managed, sustainable resources where management and replanting are government supervised.

Wherever we can, timber waste is re-used, and chemicals used in our wood finishes are processed to extract the base chemicals for use in the paint industry. We only use lacquers, wood finishes and application methods that fully comply with the latest regulatory requirements set by the Environmental Protection Agency.

We strive to re-use packaging and keep our own to a minimum. The Jukes Group believes that the environment is important to us all and with conscientious manufacturing practices, we can ensure a cleaner, safer world for generations to follow.
